Today’s Thoughts – 7 October 2020

Then Peter, turning about, seeth the disciple whom Jesus loved following; which also leaned on his breast at supper, and said, Lord, which is he that betrayeth thee? Peter seeing him saith to Jesus, Lord, and what shall this man do? Jesus saith unto him, If I will that he tarry till I come, what is that to thee? follow thou me.
When Jesus calls Peter to follow Him, Peter immediately follows! What a testimony he shows of quick submission. However, Peter takes his eyes off Christ again to look at the Apostle John as he too starts to follow Jesus.
He took his eyes off Jesus after catching a great number of fish (Luke 5:8) and again while walking on the water (Matthew 14:30). This teaches us that if we keep our eyes on Christ, we will keep ourselves from the cares of this world.
It is dangerous to look at the circumstances instead of looking to the Lord.
In this case, Peter took his eyes off Christ to look at John, another Christian. Oh! how we must be careful to compare ourselves to other Christians. We must be careful when we focus on what other Christians are doing rather than focusing on ourselves. We should be “looking unto Jesus” (Hebrews 12:1-2) not others around us.
To be distracted by ourselves, our circumstances, or by other Christians, is to disobey the Lord and possibly get detoured out of the will of God. Keep your eyes of faith on Him and on Him alone.
