Today’s Thoughts – 5 January 2021

The husbandman that laboureth must be first partaker of the fruits.

2 Timothy 2:6

Today, let us take the example of a farmer (husbandman). A farmer has many jobs. A farmer plows, sows, waters, and harvests among many things. Sometimes these jobs are shared among other fellow laborers. And sometimes, it’s one farmer on their land doing each of these jobs themself.

That’s a lot of work! And Paul says that this husbandman labored. That means the farmer put in the hard work and dedication needed for the farm. What are the results? Fruit! And the farmer is expected to be the first partaker of this harvest.

As we serve the Lord, there are many opportunities to plow, sow, water, and harvest. This is all in the spiritual sense of course as we speak of souls needing Jesus. Yet, these opportunities take hard work. It takes preparation in the Word of God and in our own hearts. It takes us actually going out and soul-winning or serving in the church.

But one day, there will be rewards in heaven and we will be the first partakers of the treasure that we have built up there. It will take patience on our part much like a farmer must wait for their crops to grow. Only if we are not slothful, but diligent in our labor for the Lord will we have fruit to gain in heaven.
